A stunning story with a fascinating cast of characters. The relationships and interaction between them all is presented brilliantly. They all come to life vividly.

This was really good. I liked the 3 perspectives of Maggie in 1998, 2019 and Kit in 2019. I loved the protective nature of Wolf and Cora. It had plenty of twists, only a couple of which I saw coming... I can't write too much without spoiling it. It's a story of secrets, lies, sibling love and unrivalled romantic love , that spans 21 years. The ending was wonderful.

“It struck me that secrets were sewn into the very fabric of the Foales. Deception to avoid conflict - and so as not to ruin lunch - a family tradition. Anything but the truth.” This, dual timeline, multi POV novel, set in 1998 and 2019 is full of secrets. Secrets of what happened, who dunnit, who is really who but it all unfolds slowly as we turn the pages, concluding in what I thought was a satisfying ending. Maggie and her little brother, Kit are left unexpectedly alone when their mother, Dee Dee, leaves one evening in May 1998 and doesn’t return. Maggie, nearly 18, is too frightened to notify the police of their mother’s disappearance, partially hoping that she will actually return but also out of fear that social services might take Kit away from her. They manage for some days on their own with the help of a new friend called Wolf, who incidentally Maggie falls head over heels for. But something happens and Maggie and Kit flee to Paris to be with their estranged aunt Cora. Fast forward to the present day and Maggie’s old home now belongs to someone else, who is digging up the patio, unaware that this will unearth a twenty year old secret and change everything for Maggie and her family. Whilst this book started a little slow, it was very easy to read and about a third of the way in, it picked up speed and I enjoyed unravelling the mysteries it held. I especially enjoyed the different points of view and alternating timelines. If you fancy a well written book with a bit of mystery, a bit of love and tangled relationships then I’d say this is a great choice.

Where to begin? Maggie and Kit are left at home while Mother Dee Dee who is also a top model, goes out for the evening. It all begins from that point. The character of Wolf seems far too sophisticated to me at the age of 19? Found it very hard to get into book as very 'wordy' to my way of thinking and could only read one chapter at a time as had to keep going back to find out just who certain things related to. It was not until more than half way through it started to grab me and the twists at the end was unexpected. Was expecting more as some very good reviews but struggled with it.

If I could give more stars I would ! I came to this with no prior knowledge and finished it confident that I had found an author I had to read more of. At it's root this is a mystery story concerning the unfolding of events that took place in the summer pf 1998 in Notting Hill and the resulting fall out 20 years later. As a mystery it's a good one and to say too much would spoil the experience for other readers .... so I won't tell. However this book is so much more than just that. Written in a beautifully evocative way the author creates a pin sharp picture of Notting Hill in the late 90's and the Paris, London and Home Counties of recent times. The images Eve Chase creates are so clear the effect is almost breath taking. For me, however, the glory of the book is in the vivid characterisation and amazing emotional intelligence that fill this book with very real life. The result is something that will evoke something in all but the most stony hearted of readers. I'm aware that my praise of this book is verging on the 'purple' but it was, simply the best thing I have read in a long, long time. I've already been recommending it widely. There's a lot here to appeal to a wide range of readers ..... and as I said Eve Chase now has a new fan.

I enjoyed this book, I think it fits in the cosy crime genre ie not too scary. Well written with characters you can empathise with so I would recommend this book.
