Gloriously Paris, with incredibly precise and enchanting writing of food, wrapped around a delectable mystery. Do not give up on the scared mouse who starts the novel, she opens up like the wine she gets to taste. Lynne Collis, author of A Taste for Silver, also set in Paris.

Do not read this book when you are hungry but at other times you will experience adventures in fashion, art and cooking so real that you will believe you are in Paris.

My first review after reading hundreds of books. Why? Because this story resonates with me. I lived in Paris around the time when this book is set. I lived just above the Rue Lepic. The feel of Paris in that era is spot on. I also met a legend at the time who showed me a side of Parisian life I would never have discovered by myself. Apart from the personal reasons for loving the book, it’s incredibly well written and researched and the story just pulls you along with it. I read it far too quickly, mostly sitting in a café in Rennes whilst waiting for a train.

It is probably a bit mean to give this novel four rather than five stars, because in spite of some reservations I really did enjoy reading it. I thought that the novel was well crafted and Reichl has successfully persuaded the reader to join her in breathing in the rarified but sensuous air of the world of fine art, fine wines and gourmet food. My only issue with the book is that it reads as a bit of a Cinderella tale - the plain, unloved and rather reserved copy editor finds that Paris is the answer to all her dreams. Wouldn’t it be great if life was full of fairy godmothers and godfathers? But there’s no jeopardy or suspense when you know from very early on that everything will work out perfectly for the star of the show.

The essence of Paris spills over in every sentence. The sheer delight is evocative if you have been to Paris but... you do not need to have visited to enjoy this book. It brings alive all that any visitor would already have captured in their memory and gives the reader who hasn't been yet a glorious treat of expectation

This book, bar none, is one of the top 3 books I have read in a lifetime! So difficult to explain the impact that it had on me, but the author's style of writing, had you accompanying her throughout each and every moment as though you were a character in the novel. The characters are all REAL, and the books glides along so effortlessly that I hope to see this perhaps translated to screen. IF a book could be perfect, this one is..!!

The Paris Novel by Ruth Reichl is a very fun and even informative Historical Fiction novel. It is about food, fashion, art, wine and a young woman that was an only child of a very self centered single Mom, Celia who had no concept of raising a child. Stella found out from her Mom's attorney that she left her money and was to go to Paris to use it. Stella was abused as a young little girl and has a very hard time trusting any one. She meets Jules an older man who wants to help her in more of a fatherly manor and also introduce her to all the wonderful things of France. There is a good story that goes with Stella's story about art and a mystery of an actual art model/artist on her own. All the authors, artist, designers, French restaurants are factual. I recommend this book as it is fun and very descriptive. You can almost taste the food and wine!!
