There’s a lot of technical detail about football playing styles and philosophies as well as the human side of Jürgen Klopp or “Kloppo” as he’s been known for a long time (and now confirmed by the man himself as he launched his Instagram account of the same name just before he left Liverpool FC!). Really interesting background and it explains how he got to where he did with his successes in all three clubs he’s managed. Very timely and I just wish that, whilst the book had been updated through to the first few years of his Liverpool days, it would be complete if it had been re-published/updated again through to May 2024 when he understandably decided he really needed a break. I look forward to reading that next chapter one way or the other - maybe in an actual autobiography in the man’s own words.

You may find it strange when I tell you that I have no interest in soccer at all. I am interested, though, in Juergen Klopp the Man because of his (so far) amazing track record in taking on down-and-out clubs and improving them, without that success making him conceited or arrogant. Towards the begining of the book the author clearly states that this is not a book about the private life of Klopp, but a truly factual sports book. To quote the author: "What qualities make him such a beloved, cult figure [...]? How could the 'People's Manager' explain the intracacies of the game to millions of Germans in a language that non-experts could understand? What were reasons behind his era of success at first Mainz and then especially Dortmund - and now, for Liverpool fans, hopefully at Anfield as well? What drives him and how did he become a league-winning manager? This book will attempt to answer these questions and many more. It paints a revealing portrait of Klopp's personality, the story of his career, his working methods and his tactical philosophy. This biography follows Klopp's progress first as a player, and then as a manager: it is not a history of his private life, but a study of his sporting and human character." Although this book obviously includes an awful lot of soccer, club and match related history and information (which, again, I'm not really interested in), I really enjoyed this book and found it very interesting. I feel that I now understand the genius of Klopp much better than before. I have to deduct one star from my rating, thus making it only four stars, because the continuous literal errors such as missed out or, indeed, superflous words such as 'the', 'a', 'at' etc, annoyed me more and more the further the book progressed. I don't blame the author as much as his editors, in particular because this 2017 revised edition should have given the publisher more than enough time to iron out these very many mistakes. More effort, please!

This book is marketed as newly published - Jun 2024. However nowhere on the description does it explain this was written in 2016 and has added chapters to bring the facts up to date. As a new reader, fine. If you already have the 2016 (which my husband does) by the same author you will find the bulk of the book is exactly the same. Clever marketing, but not accurate and Amazon should ensure authors are more transparent when advertising updated editions of their books. Thankfully Amazon offer a free return on this item so I'm not out of pocket but it's still annoying as it was a present.

You will learn a bit about what kind of character is Klopp, but as I said a bit. There is not that many information about what made Klopp make that decision or go in that club. Klopp was not involved at all in the writing of this book. Most of the statements or part's of statements are from other people who are more or less close to Klopp. The positive about this book is that you will learn the whole Klopp carrier as a player and as coach. There are in my taste a bit too much statistics about how the game ended and who scored the goals and how they scored them. I think a book like this can do without that. Also in my opinion the English translation is not that great.
