This book isn't for the faint of heart. It's a chilling, meticulously researched journey into the unthinkable: a full-blown nuclear war. Annie Jacobsen doesn't shy away from the horrifying realities, taking us step-by-step through the potential consequences, from the initial blasts to the lingering radiation sickness. It's a sobering reminder of the destructive power we wield and the devastating impact it would have on humanity, with no winners and only losers. Here's what resonated most with me: Vivid Scenario: The book's strength lies in its realistic portrayal. It's not sensationalized fiction, but a plausible walk-through of events, making the horror all the more impactful. Urgency for Peace: Jacobsen's message is clear: nuclear war is a threat we can't ignore. This book serves as a wake-up call for world leaders and all of us to strive for peace and disarmament. Well-Written and Accessible: Despite the heavy subject matter, the book is engaging and easy to follow. It doesn't require a scientific background to understand the terrifying consequences. A Few Caveats: Emotionally Challenging: Be prepared for a disturbing read. The book's honesty about the potential devastation can be emotionally draining. Not for Everyone: If you're prone to anxiety, this book might be overwhelming. Overall: "Nuclear War" is a powerful and important book. It's a stark reminder of the dangers of nuclear weapons and a call to action for a peaceful future. While it may be unsettling, it's a must-read for anyone concerned about our world's fate.

This book is terrifying in its portrayals of the horror of nuclear war. To my astonishment, many people posting reviews seem to fault the book for this. Some have criticised it for not offering solutions to the arms race. However, it's understanding the scale of the problem and its potential for global destruction that should move us to action. I assume that's the author's intention. The problem however is that there are at least three world leaders who seem to have no interest in arms reduction - Trump, Putin and Kim Jong-Un. My one problem with the book is that its scenario is not well conceived. We start with a launch of a single submarine missile by the North Koreans, the reasons for which are never explained. Well, I can forgive the author here since madmen often act irrationally but what I don't get is the idea that the NKs wouldn't appreciate that the launch would only result in the destruction of their country (which is in fact what happens). Where I do have a problem is in her depiction of the Russian response. She doesn't refer to the so-called 'hotline' at all. This used to be a teletype system - as shown in the film By Dawn's Early Light - but I've no idea how it works now. The Russian response is predicated on a breakdown in communication between the two countries but as outlined in the book, you might almost think what was being described was a knee-jerk response due to the failure of the US president to contact the Russians himself. If you're wondering about the involvement of the Russians at all, it's because - and I hadn't known this at all - US missiles aimed at North Korea would have to pass over Russia to get to their targets. I do accept the author isn't a novelist and that someone else could maybe have come up with a more plausible scenario but I was still left seriously disturbed by her descriptions of the aftermath of a nuclear explosion. I used to be totally opposed to nuclear weapons but then Putin came along and wham - back to the 80's again and the resumption of the cold war. So, I'm now in the don't know camp. However, I never, ever believed nukes had kept the peace between the superpowers. They never fought because their vital interests were never engaged and so they never needed to fight. What this book shows is that the notion of countries fighting to protect their interests is moot when you have rogue states such as North Korea and possibly others coming along.

This Book with little variation explains our Future. Nuclear War will be quick and thorough. The Author is very experienced in the Topic and interviewed many retired insiders. The only thing hard to believe is that the United States lack proper anti ICBM protection. We'll see.

Annie Jacobsen’s latest work is a masterclass in investigative journalism, offering a compelling deep dive into one of the most complex and dangerous topics of our time: the looming threat of nuclear war. Her meticulous research, backed by an impressive array of declassified documents and interviews, creates a comprehensive and authoritative narrative that sheds light on how global powers are preparing for this unimaginable scenario. Jacobsen’s writing is both informative and engaging, balancing technical detail with vivid storytelling. She pulls back the curtain on a world where cutting-edge science and military strategy converge, providing readers with a chilling but necessary understanding of the stakes involved. What makes Jacobsen’s book so powerful is not just the depth of her research, but her ability to humanize such an overwhelming topic. She doesn’t just present data and strategy; she explores the motivations, fears, and ethical dilemmas faced by the scientists, military leaders, and policymakers who are shaping the future of warfare. Jacobsen raises profound questions about the moral cost of pursuing technologies that could potentially end civilization, making her work not only a gripping read but a deeply thought-provoking one. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of global security and the evolving landscape of modern warfare. Thank you Annie!
