Mr. A.J. PENDLEBURY
Such a consistently skilful writer; he really understands the history of classic crime writing and yet weaves his modern ideas amongst quite a solid framework. Not everyone will enjoy the odd chapter of self -referencing and 5 year time gap, but my advice is to hang in there and enjoy the clever ideas. GAD readers may well smile at the nod towards" Payment Deferred" ( 1926) by C S Forester; a book written 98 years ago ,but still so germane to this one. The surprises towards the end come thick and fast ; similar in some ways to the best of Jonathan Creek! At this bargain price this should be snapped up ; doesn't really matter too much if new readers haven't read all the earlier ones .

I have read all the books in this series usually swept away by the mystery and cliff hangers but I struggled to be as captivated this time. It all felt a bit contrived although, and I do not want to give too much away, the villain of the piece would, of necessity, have contrived this whole murder plot. Just a shame some of the planning was a bit “loose”. A good read but not one that kept me hooked.

This was a very cleverly constructed murder mystery, not only the plot, Mr Horowitz including himself in the narrative. I am definitely a fan and it is always a pleasure to read a British author without all the American acronyms and abbreviations and the need to have at least several buckets of blood and gore and a large number of corpses. This was an elegant tome and a pleasure to read.

I enjoy the Anthony Horowitz Hawthorne books. They offer a different approach to the murder mystery story. They are well written with an attention to detail. The constant references to his real self are a bit off- putting but outweighed by an interesting story line.

This was an excellently constructed story which kept me interested right to the end. It was a mystery that contained many well formed characters and moved along at an excellent pace, yet kept the reader in the dark as to what was the solution to the whole conundrum right to the finale. There was a brutal murder in an extremely unlikely location and the group of suspects, similarly unlikely candidates to be perpetrators of such a crime, were the only people who could have done it. Each appeared to have a motive but it seemed incredible to think any of them could have committed the crime. Read on, its worth it.

I nearly gave up on this a few times, it seemed like a very simple plot, almost too easy. But...... Read this book to the absolute final page. A complicated web spun around numerous red herrings & well worth investing some time too. 4 stars purely because there were parts that were hard to follow.

This was another fantastic book from Horowitz. Besides the good story, the characters had depth and I could not stop reading until I finished the book. Really recommended.

Once again, Anthony Horowitz writes a clever, creative and vastly entertaining detective novel. There are several delightfully surprising twists, which is a special kind of joy for those of us who enjoy this genre. The characters really come alive on the page, which is one of my tests for great story writing, that I forget I’m reading and am immersed in someone else’s world. Very satisfying! The location in a residential close overlooking the Thames becomes a character in its own right, forming a lot of the propulsive force driving events and affecting relationships between the very disparate characters. The relationship between the detectives becomes a deeply textured and structural element in the plot. Again, enjoyable, unique, touching even. Looking forward to the next book!

Whenever a pet appears in a story, I fear that it will die miserably. In most cases, this fear comes true, as it does in this book. I thought Anthony was a dog lover, so this surprises me a lot. It was a terrible read for me anyway, so only 3 points, especially as this is also the weakest Hawthorne book in my opinion. The characters remain boring and unconvincing.
