Nate Caslin is a flawed individual but a great detective and he doesn’t let anything get in his way of solving a gruesome case. Really good read.

There are a lot of very detailed descriptions in this book, granular breakdowns of a scene or emotions that take you out of the plot at points. The hero is either slightly rogue, or on the verge of a breakdown- maybe a combination of the two, and loves a bit of self sabotage. The girl at the beginning also feels like a loose end that I wasn't expecting.

I really enjoyed the book. It was a good read, making you want to get back to it. I found you had to concentrate on the story, remembering who was who. I felt there were too many characters that needn't have been there. But saying that I would read the author again

I thoroughly enjoyed Divided House - the first in the series set in Yorkshire. I have read all of the Norfolk stories, and now find that the new lead detective in the Yorkshire stories is just as compelling. As a result I have purchased the next five books in the series, and I look forward to reading them. Thank you .

Thoroughly enjoyable read and looking forward to many more by J M Dalgliesh. Great characters and plot. The twists and turns had me guessing who did it to the end.

There have been some rather good crime novels set in Yorkshire but I think that this one is up there with the best. There was nothing easy or predictable about it and it went off in many different directions, adding an extra layer to the story each time. I admit that the stereotypical "troubled" detective has been overdone at times but somehow this one has something extra. Perhaps it is that he proves from time to time that he can step away from his bad habits and maintain a clear perspective when he has to, although he does maintain a disturbing propensity to go off on his own and take too many risks. Certain elements of this story could seem rather clichéd in the hands of less skilful writers but this author hits it just right. Seemingly unconnected cases cause divisions of labour amongst the teams but that is not the eponymous Divided House. Nate Caslin, of course, cannot follow the order to stay out of another case and has a good reason, which he cannot share, to poke around where he is not supposed to. He is also tenacious with his own case, he is convinced that there is more to it than everyone around him believes. He risks everything to prove his beliefs but how far will he go? This has been an absorbing read which has been sitting in my To Be Read pile for a long time, I wish I had got to it sooner! I am glad to see that there are more in the series and they will be going to the top of my pile very soon.

This series is definitely going on my list - the first book is spectacular!! The twists in the plot were fascinating, unusual, making it difficult to make good guesses on how the murder mysteries would be solved. The tension racked up to a surprising reveal. Whew! Highly recommended!!

If you are into crime thrillers that center on the cops and detectives investigating, then this won't disappoint. It has enough slow burning tension to keep you reading and doesn't pack the story with lots of light frilly material intended to bring depth to the characters or protagonist. It gives you depth by focusing on plot and drops in enough detail when necessary but in ways that always keep you guessing. If you like Rankin, Nesbo or Connelly, then you will thoroughly enjoy Dalgliesh.

different spin on the police procedural genre that I enjoy. perhaps a bit too much going on one plot line would have been sufficient as the writing style was engaging. look forward to others by this author.

It was a bit of a slow start and quite complicated in the end. I am still confused about who was who of the leadership team brought in to overlook everything. And the author seemed hyper-focused on describing every last piece of furniture and decorative item in various rooms. Caslin seems to have a lot of unexplained prehistory before this book starts. Hopefully it will come out later in the series. Not a perfectly written volume...I think the author came fully into his craft a few years later. But overall a good read.
