Fear and superstition are not a good combination for a king. Burning innocent women in the name of witchcraft sounds ridiculous today. Women were vulnerable, but a woman with knowledge of healing was a witch. A vunarable king, cruel men. This has it all.

Not for the faint hearted but this book is a real page turner for historical fiction enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in the history of witchcraft alike. I was enthralled by the characters who I grew to love and hate in equal measure and gripped by the intrigue of the plot. I’ve recommended it to everyone I can think of!

This book had me hooked from the start. You see a side of the Scottish Witch Trials that’s very seldom seen and it’s magical. The historical gaps are slim and the historical accuracy is exquisite. I’ll be recommending it to everyone

The first few lines of a book generally hook me or lose me. The Burnings kept me hooked from the first page to the last! A page turner that I found wonderfully written with characters that I really cared about. The historical detail was so interesting but heart wrenching also and the descriptive writing was very evocative and took you in to the heart of the 16th century. A great novel by a great author.

Convincing and absorbing historical fiction with finely crafted characters. But be warned, the detailed descriptions of the torture meted out to so-called witches is pretty gruesome. It's like a horror movie where you hide behind the sofa. Unfortunately, what is described in lurid detail is also true. And horrific.

A really well written book which shows really well how the life of women healers could change to a nightmare just because of people’s belief in witchcraft. It is also interesting to read about the goings on at court in this time period.
